Lighting.Directory

For AI assistants

Use Lighting Directory from Claude, ChatGPT or any MCP client

Everything on this site is available to AI agents as structured tools. There are two ways in, and both run the same code against the same data the pages render.

  • A remote MCP server at https://lighting.directory/api/mcp. Add it as a connector in Claude, a custom connector in ChatGPT, or an MCP server in Cursor, Claude Code or any client that speaks Streamable HTTP. No key, no login.
  • WebMCP tools on every page. Agents that drive a browser (ChatGPT’s desktop browser, Gemini in Chrome) find the same tools registered on document.modelContext, plus a declarative search form on the home page, so they can act on the site instead of scraping it.

Set up in one minute

Claude.ai and Claude desktop: Settings, Connectors, Add custom connector, then paste the URL above.

ChatGPT: Settings, Connectors, Create, then paste the URL with authentication set to none.

Claude Code:

claude mcp add --transport http lighting-directory https://lighting.directory/api/mcp

Cursor, Windsurf and JSON-configured clients:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "lighting-directory": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://lighting.directory/api/mcp"
    }
  }
}

The tools

All read-only. Store results carry a visitUrl, the same tracked link the site’s own buttons use; some of those links earn us a commission, as explained on the disclosure page.

search_stores
Find online lighting retailers in the directory. Filters combine with AND. `query` is matched word by word against the store name, description, best-for notes and facets, so a phrase like "brass pendant uk" works; country words match where a profile mentions them, and shipping coverage is confirmed on each retailer's site. Facet slugs must come from list_facets. Returns each store's profile URL and a `visitUrl` for sending the shopper to the retailer; use visitUrl, never a guessed domain, for outbound links. Read-only.
Inputs: query, category, style, room, limit
get_store
Full profile for one store by slug (from search_stores): description, categories, styles, rooms, price level, shipping, best-for notes, our hand-checked legitimacy verdict with third-party ratings, FAQs, any promotion running today, and which editorial comparisons include it. Read-only.
Inputs: slug
list_deals
Every store promotion we have verified by hand that has not passed its stated end date: the offer, how it is claimed (code, sitewide sale, clearance or automatic discount), the code if there is one, when we last checked and when the store says it ends. Offers marked unconfirmed were seen on the store's site but could not be verified live. Always tell the user the verification date. Read-only.
compare_stores
Side-by-side comparison of two stores by slug. When the directory has an editorial comparison for the pair it returns that: the angle each store takes, when to choose which, and FAQs. Otherwise it returns both profiles' facts so you can compare them yourself. Read-only.
Inputs: a, b
list_facets
The valid slugs for filtering search_stores, with names and one-line descriptions: product categories, lighting styles and rooms. Also lists the published buying guides with URLs. Call this before filtering by facet. Read-only.
calculate_lumens
How many lumens a room needs for general ambient light and how many standard 800-lumen LED bulbs that is, from room type and dimensions in feet. Same rule of thumb as lighting.directory/tools/lumens-calculator. Read-only.
Inputs: room, lengthFt, widthFt
calculate_chandelier_size
Recommended chandelier diameter in inches, fixture height and hanging guidance. Pass room length and width in feet for a room-sized fixture, or tableWidthIn for one over a dining table. ceilingHeightFt adds fixture-height and clearance advice. Same rules as lighting.directory/tools/chandelier-size-calculator. Read-only.
Inputs: roomLengthFt, roomWidthFt, ceilingHeightFt, tableWidthIn

Try it from the terminal

curl -s https://lighting.directory/api/mcp \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"tools/call","params":{"name":"search_stores","arguments":{"query":"brass pendant uk","limit":3}}}'

House rules for agents

  • Deals carry the date we verified them. Quote it, and confirm on the retailer before treating a figure as current.
  • Legitimacy verdicts are editorial syntheses of third-party ratings, not endorsements.
  • The server has no rate limit today. Be reasonable; a search is cheap, a crawl of every profile is what llms-full.txt is for.
