What to check before ordering a chandelier online: sizing, ceiling requirements, freight shipping, and which stores to shortlist.
Published 2026-07-04

A chandelier is usually the most expensive, heaviest, and most visible fixture in a home — which makes buying one online feel risky. It doesn't have to be, if you check the right things in the right order.
Add your room's length and width in feet; the sum in inches is a workable chandelier diameter. For dining rooms, size to the table instead: roughly half to two-thirds of the table's width or length, hung 30 to 36 inches above the surface. Knowing your target size first lets you filter any store's catalog quickly.
Large chandeliers need a rated ceiling box, and heavy ones may need bracing between joists. Check the fixture's weight on the product page and plan for an electrician if it exceeds what your existing box supports.
Many chandeliers ship oversized or freight, which changes both cost and the returns process. Read the store's shipping and return pages before ordering, and photograph packaging on arrival in case of damage claims.
Stores listed under the chandeliers category in Lighting Directory carry chandeliers as part of their range. Browse the category page, open two or three store profiles, and compare their actual catalogs side by side before deciding.
